Home, Rugged Country Lodge Motel

Pendleton, Oregon

Welcome to the Rugged Country Lodge!

I’m so happy you discovered Rugged Country Lodge and our website. I’ve got a hunch you found us because you’re someone who’s probably a little bit like me-- you love finding the unexpected lodging, having grown weary of the same old homogenized experience found in all those other chain motels. And I’m betting you want a good value to boot. Well, rest assured, you came to one of the best places to stay in Pendleton!

As a well- seasoned traveler myself, I’m always looking for that special little place that pays attention to the details, is sparkling clean, feels cozy and warm- -like a bed and breakfast—all the while exuding a unique vintage charm that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg.

And that’s the fun of Rugged Country! As an independent small business owner I get to do it my way, which means I’ve packaged up all those qualities into one darn cute little place that is anything but boring! Rugged Country Lodge isn’t for everybody, but it is perfect for YOU--the guest who wants a serendipitous vintage experience in an authentic roadside motel in historic Pendleton, Oregon. Once you’re here, we guarantee you’ll dream soft!

Our Story

Once Upon a Time

When I was a little girl I loved playing house. I spent hours fluffing pillows, picking and arranging straggly flower bouquets and constantly reorganizing my parents’ well-worn furniture. Well, I’m all grown up now, but that doesn’t mean I’ve quit playing house. No, now I’m doing it on a little grander scale!

To date, I’ve re-decorated my way through quite a variety of abodes: a cab over camper, a horse trailer with living quarters, an office building, various homes, a restaurant and yes, I’ve even designed what I call “Ralph Lauren” tipis at the RimRock Inn in Enterprise, Oregon! As a matter of fact, I’d probably redo the dog box, if only I could get into it!

Having a small motel to redecorate has truly been a labor of love and has given me great satisfaction. I’ve tried to make Rugged Country Lodge the kind of place I love finding out on the road, but seldom do. My decorating style is influenced by many things and is tailored to the project, but certainly traveling in Europe has had a major effect. Above all else, my first priority (in wherever my decorating takes me) is to make the space feel as warm, cozy and inviting as possible.

  • Just a quick stop on a drive East for us. The room was clean. The staff was very nice. The breakfast had cereal, bagels, muffins and more. Our walk to downtown took about 25 minutes. Really appreciated the window air conditioner on a very hot day!

I was unsure what to expect when I booked here because we usually stay at the nationwide chains. There was no availability at the Wildhorse Casino so I serched elsewhere. I was not disappointed. This is the cleanest place! Not just the rooms but also the exterior. No dust on the awnings, not a spiderweb anywhere. The breakfast area is well equipped. You can tell that they take so much pride in their business. Rooms are on the small side but beds are comfortable, linens in great condition and everything is spotlessly clean. I will definitely stay here next time through. It's on the right side of Pendleton if you want to go to the Casino. Just a quick 4 mile drive with easy access on and off the freeway. It's a bonus that we supported a small business owner who was very nice to deal with.

Very clean room. Older but well kept. Bed was comfortable. Had a mini fridge and microwave. Air conditioner was very cold. Extra large closet. Here for Pendelton RoundUp week and would book here again. Nice breakfast area and meet some nice folks. Nearby activities: Pendelton women mill is a couple blocks away and have tours and great buys on Pendelton made items. Food & drinks: Gambling and dining at the Wild Horse casino about 3 miles away. Just blocks away is a hamburger place and gas station. Had great food at the restaurant “The Saddle “

  • This was a nice surprise. The room was very clean. A bit small, but I'll take clean any day. The guy at the front desk was very pleasant. The breakfast was continental, but was good. We stayed here twice and both times were great. Will stay here again. Some people complained about the train being too close, but we didn't even notice it.

We are glad we read about this hotel and decided to stay here. We are guessing it’s family owned and everyone who worked there was very friendly, professional and accommodating. It’s a small-ish hotel that is kept up well. The rooms aren’t big or fancy…quaint…which works fine for us. The train is nearby but we didn’t hear it until mid morning so I’d say it was a non-issue for us. Breakfast was a small, continental affair and nothing to write home about. But, it does come with your room so that’s always nice. We’d definitely stay here again. Nearby activities: Pendleton is a 5 minute drive/25-30 minute walk. Cute, “western” town. Pendleton store and factory just down the road from the hotel. Walkability: You can drive to town in five minutes. If you like walking, you can get there in about 25-30 minutes and walk along the river (behind the hotel a bit). You can walk to the Pendleton store/factory in about ten minutes (book your factory tour in advance).

For a budget hotel it’s terrific. Rooms are a bit small. We start here cause the ratings were 8/10. Extremely clean. Decent breakfast. Friendly owner who wants to please. Would stay here again.

Love it and so affordable. Give it a try. You will be pleased. Oh and my hot bath last night was so sweet after a long day of driving.

My husband and I stayed here 2 weeks ago when we were in town to pick up a travel trailer from Thompson RV. The room was impeccably clean with comfortable beds and charming decor. The staff was positive, accommodating and dedicated to the guests' comfort. The manager even provided a large bandaid when asked. The breakfast offered something for everyone. I look forward to our next visit to Rugged Country Lodge.
